Introduction
About Frazier Rehabilitation Institute
Frazier Rehab Institute is an acute care rehabilitation hospital which opened in 1954 and has recently
expanded from a 5-story, 90-bed facility a to 15-story, 135-bed tower. Brand-new, private
rooms were recently (February, 2006) opened on the 7th (TBI, Stroke), 8th (Pediatrics), 9th (Orthopedic, General), and
10th (SCI) floors of the new expansion. Each floor has its own therapy gym with a full-glass wall overlooking the Louisville
skyline. The 6th floor contains the Outpatient therapy gym, Gait analysis, 2 pools for aquatic therapy, Neuropsychology, the
Movement Disorder Clinic of world-renowned neurologist Dr. Irene Litvan, and the Spinal Cord Injury Clinic. The 11th floor houses the cardiopulmonary gym and The Trager Pavilion at Frazier
(which is another floor of private rooms which are reserved for those requesting extra attention). The 15th floor houses Administration,
2 as-yet-to-be-finished large conference rooms, the PMR residents' and academic office, and Dr. Susan Harkema's SCI research offices for the University of Louisville's Kentucky Spinal Cord Injury Research Center and NeuroRecovery Network. Dr. Harkema is the Rehabilitation Research Director at KSCIRC. Frazier provides excellent exposure
to a variety of patients, pathology, and experiences which all contribute to a fulfilling and rewarding
training experience.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Residency Program in PM&R at Frazier Rehab Institute/University of Louisville is to
provide an exceptional, educational experience in patient care, research, and leadership. Through didactics, self-study, and
group interactions the resident physician will learn to provide optimum care for individuals with physical disability to allow
the highest quality of life.
